John
Fahey 1939-2001
During a
recording career that spanned more than four decades and some 40-plus
albums, John Fahey electrified several generations of guitarists. Since
his death in 2001, Fahey’s stature has only grown. He stands today as
the most vital, original, and influential American steel-string
guitarist of the 20th century.
Tonight’s
tribute features three guitarists with strong ties to John Fahey, each
of whom contributed to the 2006 Takoma Records release, “The Revenge of
Blind Joe Death – the John Fahey Tribute CD”: Peter Lang,
a pioneer of roots oriented acoustic guitar forms, was a mentor and
spiritual guide to John Fahey and is featured on the platinum-selling
release, “John Fahey, Peter Lang, Leo Kottke”; Michael Gulezian,
a phenomenal technical guitarist with the rare ability to transcend his
own virtuosity, has been called the musical link between John Fahey and
Michael Hedges; and teacher, composer, & musicologist Nick
Schillace has used Fahey’s self described American Primitive
style as a foundation for his own expansive and idiosyncratic
compositions. Prepare for an evening of greatness!
