As part of their 2023/24 season Institute of Musical Traditions proudly presents ilyAIMY and Ayreheart’s weird and wonderful, passionate collaboration. Dave Eisner (IMT) came out to our last show together, and in that Dave voice of his said “hrm. You know… this is pretty good. Needs bigger speakers”. He's arranged for exactly that.

For centuries, the lute was considered the “prince of instruments,” and lute players were celebrities in royal courts across Europe. Ayreheart, a progressive folk trio founded by lutenist Ronn McFarlane, seeks to restore the instrument to its former glory – but in a modern context. During the Renaissance and Baroque eras, lute players were songwriters and pop stars who weren’t afraid to improvise. The three members of Ayreheart – McFarlane on lute, Will Morris on fretless bass, violin and colascione, and Mattias Rucht on percussion – all have backgrounds in rock and jazz, which comes through in their energetic performances.

For two decades, rob Hinkal and Heather Aubrey Lloyd have crisscrossed the nation as ilyAIMY (i love you And I Miss You). They have played everything from bait shops to biker weeks to clothing-optional resorts. They engage audiences with humor and award-winning narrative songs that pair an unforgettably soulful and powerful female vocalist with a percussive, clawhammer-like guitarist. Their infectious energy and rapid-fire lyricism is softened with cello and lush harmony, making ilyAIMY “a welcome jolt” and “an acoustically roiling, combustible attack on the usual singer/songwriter fare,” say reviewers.
