Friday June 19th, Institute of Musical Traditions presents Karen Ashbrook at Church of the Ascension in Silver Spring MD.

Join Karen Ashbrook on hammered dulcimer with Sophie Chang on cello and Paul Oorts on harp guitar, cittern, and 10-string classical guitar for an IMT concert including music from Karen's new recording "Hands of the Healer–Gentle Music for the Spirit." The music represents her 50-year journey of travels with the dulcimer, with music from 5 continents and also lush contemporary compositions. It will be  will be live streamed as well. 

The live stream will be available for 7 days after the concert.

Karen is an international pioneer and advocate in the revival of the hammered dulcimer. Along the way she added Irish wooden flute and pennywhistle.

Her career has spanned performances and teaching throughout Europe and Asia. She performs frequently with her husband Paul Oorts, a multi-instrumentalist from Belgium. Her strong commitment to using her music as a healing art led her to become a therapeutic musician, founding Music for the Spirit-healing hammered dulcimer music.

Karen is a board member of the Cimbalom World Association, which promotes all forms of the dulcimer internationally.

Hailed by the Boston Globe as a “charismatic performer and singer”, Garnet is a man with a powerful physical presence – close to six and a half feet tall – with a voice to match.
