Sponsored in conjunction with Institute of Musical Traditions AT School of Musical Traditions, down the street from HOUSE of Musical Traditions, this is a rare thing : a small LISTENING ROOM open mic. The evening is free, but every night we have a featured artist and we hope that you can support them by tipping or purchasing merch!
This week w featured artist Sadia! My friend Miles Spicer (MSG Acoustic Blues) brought Sadia the Star out to my open mic night as a “voice you’ve GOT TO HEAR” – an up-and-coming Washington DC artist with a beautiful voice and heartfelt, intimate lyrics. In our world today, maybe it’s good to step back into a microcosm every once in a while and remember that sometimes we are “allowed” to just sing about missing our friends, and that that is BEAUTIFUL. Miles went on to write "She's a recent graduate of John's Hopkins University, a marvelous talent and a gentle spirit with soaring vocals and well placed guitar... It's been a pleasure watching her develop thus far. There's so much more to come."
Every Tuesday, sponsored by Institute of Musical Traditions and hosted by School of Musical Traditions and run by rob's Open Mics: the Open Spark - a listening-room style open mic with weekly featured artists! 4/15 w Jack Lavin, 4/22 w Babel Baby, 4/29 w Collide, 5/6 w Tavair Tapp, 5/13 w Ash Devine…
FocusMusic presents Ayreheart at Episcopal Church of the Ascension. 633 Sligo Ave., Silver Spring, MD 20910 | 7.30pm | $25+ (tickets at focusmusic.org)
LAST week we presented ilyAIMY and Ayreheart together - and that was a powerful show, magnified by perfect weather out under the Bumper Car Pavilion and the slowly setting sun in Glen Echo. Next month you can catch Ayreheart on their own right here in Silver Spring (or online) in all their unadulterated baroque goodness!
Ronn McFarlane’s compositions draw influence from Celtic music, American folk, jazz, and bluegrass, making a case for the lute as a versatile instrument worth incorporating into modern popular music. With Ayreheart, McFarlane is reinventing the lute, giving the instrument its own renaissance, and bringing it to contemporary audiences with eclectic tastes.
Wednesday June 4th, Institute of Musical Traditions presents Garnet Rogers.
Seekers Church 276 Carroll St NW, Washington, DC 20012 | 7:30pm Tickets : $25 advance (+$2 box office fee) / $30 door
Garnet Rogers has established himself as ‘One of the major talents of our time”. Hailed by the Boston Globe as a “charismatic performer and singer”, Garnet is a man with a powerful physical presence – close to six and a half feet tall – with a voice to match. With his “smooth, dark baritone” (Washington Post) his incredible range, and thoughtful, dramatic phrasing, Garnet is widely considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the finest singers anywhere. His music, like the man himself, is literate, passionate, highly sensitive, and deeply purposeful. Cinematic in detail, his songs “give expression to the unspoken vocabulary of the heart” (Kitchener Waterloo Record). An optimist at heart, Garnet sings extraordinary songs about people who are not obvious heroes and of the small victories of the everyday. As memorable as his songs, his over-the-top humour and lightning-quick wit moves his audience from tears to laughter and back again.
Grammy Award winners Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer are master musicians whose superb harmonies are backed by instrumental virtuosity on the guitar, five-string banjo, ukulele, mandolin, cello-banjo, and more. Cathy & Marcy’s Old Time Coalition, featuring Rachel Eddy (fiddle), Becky Hill (percussive dance, vocals), and Em Hammond (bass, percussive dance), has grown out of a mutual love of Appalachian music and dance. They take the passion of a late-night porch jam session and put it on stage.
